Duke of York


The Duke of York's Royal Military School offers great opportunities to children from military families. They are a non-selective fully boarding state academy for all children aged 11 - 18. Set in 150 acres of Kentish countryside, their 450 pupils feel safe in a close-knit community where their friends and teachers understand military life.  They combine a culture of academic excellence with caring for the individual and our GCSE and A Level results are significantly higher than the national average. Families only pay for boarding costs, and if you qualify for CEA, that could be just over £1,000 a year.

Lifeworks

2013 sees a new addition to the Lifework Programme with LifeWorks Families; a course for the spouses, and partners of service personnel who want to achieve sustainable employment in Civvy Street.

Lifeworks and Lifeworks for Families are two programmes which offer vocational assessments, career advice, employability training (CV writing, understanding the jobs market, networking, social media, interviews etc) and the Concept of Change (i.e. understanding your thinking style, negativity towards change etc).  Lifeworks is aimed at Service Leavers / Veterans who are struggling to find gainful employment whilst Lifeworks for Families is for Spouses, Partners and dependents of service personnel.

Designed around the often difficult circumstances of coping with existing family commitments, this short course equips delegates with the skills and confidence to develop their own careers.  The LifeWorks Families course builds on the change-management coaching and vocational assessment modules that form the core of the standard LifeWorks+ courses; courses that have been running successfully for over 2 years now.  But in addition, Lifeworks Families has an added employability module designed specifically for those finding themselves in the unfamiliar position of supporting their family financially.  The course will be delivered by RBLI’s own professional Training and Assessment Team.

Working in partnership with MOD, RBLI will deliver the first of these fully-funded courses from October 2013, with subsequent courses scheduled monthly throughout 2013, 2014 and 2015.  Built to focus on the key components required to make a successful transition into employment, this course will comprise the following elements:

  • Coaching 4 Change
    An interactive workshop which deals with understanding and managing the impact of change, improving self-efficacy and promoting a solution-focused approach
  • Vocational Goal
    Feedback and reports from on-line vocational assessment which will help delegates identify strengths and potential career or training opportunities
  • Employability Workshops
    A range of sessions allowing individuals to develop a better understanding of the following:
o   CV writing
o   Job search and the job market including the ‘Hidden’ job market
o   Interview techniques
o   Application forms – how to get that interview.
