Wimbish In-Service SSAFA

This year has been a good one for fundraising for ssafa! We have funds to respond to needs that individuals face and on top of that we have raised enough that we can think about bigger, more lasting projects.

This would be pointless without asking you what you want. So we are asking for suggestions. What do you think our communities (Wimbish and Wethersfield) need? Can you see any areas where money would be well spent (not really up for backyard pool expenditure for individual families or bars in single soldiers rooms but other ideas welcome!)? Even if it isn't an idea that requires money, if you can see a way our communities and lives can be improved please let us know either on the facebook site, at the HIVE or in the suggestion box in the Village Hall.

We want to hear your voice!

*Whilst we will try we can't promise to deliver on every idea but all suggestions will be weighed equally.

Welcome Home 21 Fd Sqn (EOD)

Welcome home: Soldiers who trained the Afghan Army in bomb disposal have paraded through Saffron Walden in Essex to mark their return from Afghanistan. 21 Field Squadron, part of 101 Engineer Regiment based at Carver Barracks, in Wimbish, was part of the 400-strong Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Search Task Force comprising 23 units from the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force that returned from Operation Herrick 17 in April. The Task Force was responsible for the training of the Afghan National Army’s bomb disposal team in addition to their front line duties of searching for and destroying improvised explosive devices on the ground.

The Commanding Officer of 101 Engineer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Stockley, said: “The officers and soldiers of 21 Field Squadron should be justifiably proud of what they achieved on operations in Afghanistan. They have assisted in restoring normality to communities ravaged by decades of conflict, whilst giving the Afghans the confidence to render safe the pernicious threat from the insurgent’s improvised explosive devices.”

Follow the Flag

A new website called Follow the Flag to help Forces families promote their independent businesses.
It was established by two army wives to enable Forces families to promote their businesses on a smart, easy to navigate website. The content is updated weekly, featuring interviews with members, offers, and items of general interest.
‘Follow the Flag’ advertises a broad range of services offered by families in the Forces, including bespoke presents, re-upholsterers, cake makers, tailors, personal solicitors, authors and military artists.
Members to the site receive their own login and are able to update any of their advert information including their region and contact details each time they move! All of the profits from the subscriptions are donated to three military charities.
If you are a forces wife or family member running your own businesses then get in touch with the follow the flag team contact@followtheflag.com to find out more.
Follow The Flag are very keen to encourage those considering starting their own business. They offer free advice and advertising to all start-ups.

TV Licensing

In Ministry of Defence (MOD) accommodation, on or off base, anyone who watches or records television programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any device, must be covered by a TV Licence. This includes computers, laptops, TVs, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.

Armed forces personnel are not usually covered by their home TV Licence while living on base. In service accommodation, they’re only covered by their home licence if they watch TV using a device that’s powered solely by its own internal batteries, and it is not plugged into the mains or an aerial.

If service personnel do not require a TV Licence, you need to let TV Licensing know. If you already have one but no longer need it, you may be entitled to a refund.
The MOD fully supports us in administering TV Licensing legislation.
It costs £145.50 for colour & £49.00 for a black and white TV Licence.
